CRAWFORD STEPS IN THE SPORTS ZONE

Crawford Steps In the Sports Zone

Independent publisher In the Sports Zone, a licensee of major universities and three of the U.S. pro sports leagues, has acquired the rights to Crawford the Cat. Crawford is a video-, online gaming-, and app-based educational property that teaches kids core values such as manners, cleaning their rooms, and brushing their teeth. Alita’s Brand Bar, licensing agent for Crawford rights owner Crawford’s Corner, brokered the deal. The agreement marks In the Sports Zone’s first partnership outside of the world of sports, and Crawford’s first license for publishing.

The paperback activity book, which just hit Amazon, is for children ages four to seven. “I love the people behind the Crawford the Cat brand,” said Darla Hall, founder of ITSZ. “They care about kids and teaching kids valuable life lessons, and that’s my mission too. It’s colorful, it has the lessons, and it’s a fun way for kids to learn.” The fact that Crawford could appeal to children nationally, rather than needing to be regionalized—as is the case with sports licensing—was also attractive.

Hall, who formerly owned a marketing company, founded ITSZ in September 2011 after a client’s child was in an accident and she could not find an activity book as a gift for the young University of Alabama sports fan. To fill the gap, she created the first Roll Tide Activity Book, securing a license from the Collegiate Licensing Company (now IMG College) in 2012. (Visits and donations to children’s hospitals remain core to ITSZ’s business model.)

Since then, ITSZ has expanded its business to include more than 200 licensed titles in a variety of formats: 48-page kids’ activity books, adult coloring books, some apps, and recently the first concept storybooks for younger kids. There are titles for all of the teams in the National Football League, Major League Baseball, and the National Basketball Association, along with 38 universities. In addition to signing Crawford, Hall has recently expanded into corporate titles with the likes of Ace Hardware and Jockey.

ITSZ’s books are sold online, including at B&N and Amazon, in Learning Express stores and mom-and-pop book and toy stores, and in about a third of the teams’ shops. Although Hall is currently a one-person operation, she is developing partnerships to assume marketing and other duties. “I’ll have the capacity to do more things in the licensing industry,” she said.

In Brief

CRAWFORD THE CAT GETS ACTIVITY BOOK

In the Sports Zone created the first Crawford the Cat Activity & Coloring Book.

Through a deal inked with the children’s educational brand, In the Sports Zone developed an activity book targeted for kids ages 4-7.

The activity book includes 48 full-color pages of content including educational games, puzzles, drawing, coloring, and more. The paperback activity book retails for $12.99 and is sold on Amazon.

“In the Sports Zone is excited to partner with Crawford the Cat, the educational and entertaining children’s brand that teaches positive values,” said Darla Hall. “The creators have the best intentions in mind as their goal is to educate young children about topics such as cleaning their rooms, brushing their teeth, manners, and other core values.”

“We’re thrilled to bring forward another excellent product that parents and teachers will feel great about sharing with children,” said Mike Ruggiero, Managing Partner of Crawford’s Corner. “Kids will engage with the beloved Crawford the Cat character through creative activities and age-appropriate games and puzzles. And it all ties in perfectly with Crawford’s library of videos.”

Alita Friedman, CEO of Alita’s Brand Bar and brand manager for Crawford the Cat, brokered the licensing deal.

IN THE SPORTS ZONE LAUNCHES CRAWFORD THE CAT ACTIVITY BOOK

In the Sports Zone has signed a pact with the creators of children’s educational brand Crawford the Cat for a new activity and coloring book based on the animated character.

The book, aimed at the 4-7-year-old demographic, will include a collection of educational games, puzzles, drawings and colorings. Consumers can buy the paperback of the book now exclusively via Amazon.

Crawford’s Corner, the creators of Crawford the Cat, have continued to ink new deals for the character. Earlier this year, the company signed a slew of new digital agreements with various partners.

HOW TEACHERS & PARENTS CAN USE CRAWFORD THE CAT VIDEOS

Disclosure: I partnered with Crawford’s Corner LLC to bring you this information & giveaway.

Crawford the Cat is an adorable, enthusiastic cat whose short videos on Amazon video teach kids social etiquette and healthy habits, tying into curriculum and instruction for young children. Kids will love Crawford’s kind personality, the jaunty music, and appealing stories. Parents and teachers will love the important life lessons.

Crawford the Cat

Recently I had a chance to speak with Lauren Engle, a 20-year experienced New Jersey kindergarten teacher. She uses the Crawford the Cat videos in her classroom to teach her students about social etiquette and healthy habits. (Go HERE to see all the videos.)

Engle told me that another teacher first introduced her to Crawford the Cat videos when she was helping her students learn about hand washing. Because Teachers share their best ideas. And they know these videos are super.

Engle uses Crawford the Cat videos in her kindergarten classroom because the videos meet all her requirements: educational, short, and connect to the curriculum. “It’s nice to play a short little movie like the one about washing hands.” She rarely uses videos but these are too good not to include.

Here’s how Engle uses the videos:

Watch the video.

Discuss.

Model what was taught in the video.

Roleplay.

Refer back. Throughout the day and following weeks and months, she refers back to the video with her students and the lesson Crawford taught like sneezing into the bend of their arm.

Keep practicing.

Engle also recommends that for whatever topic you’re teaching, whether about social etiquette or healthy habits to also “read books that have a similar situation.” Just as with the video, she explains that it’s beneficial for children to stop and discuss the story. You might ask, “was it a wise choice or a sad choice?“, “what could be done differently?” and any questions that will help children think critically about the story. Another way to reinforce the learning is to role play. And good news! Crawford the Cat has 7 online E-Books that connect to the videos’ lessons seamlessly. Read the books silently or follow along as Crawford reads to you. For example, The Sneezer Pleaser book reinforces the “Crawford is a Sneezer-Pleaser” episode 5 video found on Amazon Video. These would be great to read at home, too.

How teachers use Crawford the Cat videos in the classroom to teach social etiquette & Healthy Habits

Throughout the day, seize those teachable moments,” Engle says. “This is what we are doing now, and this is what we could do better.

I just learned that Crawford the Cat’s website has printouts that go with it,” Engle told me. In fact, there are videos, books, printables, lesson plans, and games. What a great resource for teachers! Discover additional free Crawford the Cat companion materials for young children here.

Don’t miss the Crawford Teacher’s Store which has lesson plans ($2.99 each) and incentive stickers!

Kids think Crawford’s really cute,” elaborates Engle. “I recommend the videos for preschool, kindergarten, and first grade.

Parents and teachers both can use these videos to teach and reinforce the following concepts:

  • Hand washing
  • Teeth brushing
  • Cleaning up
  • Exercising
  • Covering sneezes
  • Including others
  • Working hard
  • Table manners
  • Dressing for the weather
  • Trying new foods
  • Saying please and thank you

Engle says she also mentions the videos to parents at conference time and in her newsletter. For example, she’s excited about the upcoming Crawford the Cat’s Christmas video. Since her school tries to stay neutral on holidays so she will mention it in a newsletter instead of showing it in the classroom. She hopes parents will watch it with their kids at home.

If you’re not a teacher, please pass on this information to teachers you know!
